Geographic Information Systems Committee - Description

The Committee provides a forum for the regionís local government Geographic Information Systems (GIS) managers to meet and discuss issues related to the development and use of GIS and geospatial data in the metropolitan Washington area.

 

The Committee is responsible for:

 

         Providing expert advice to the Metro Chief Information Officers Committee, the Chief Administrative Officers, the COG Board of Directors and other COG Committees on matters concerned with Geographic Information Systems;

 

                 Communicating and collaborating with other COG committees on issues involving to GIS and geospatial data;

 

                 Promoting the exchange of information and ideas on the use of GIS and geospatial data and the development of best technology practices;

 

                Recommending policies and standards related to GIS technology and geospatial data for consideration by COG member governments and other public sector agencies in the metropolitan Washington region;

 

                 Fostering cooperation, collaboration and communication on GIS-related issues among the local, state, and federal agencies, educational institutions, private industry and non-profit organizations in the metropolitan Washington area;

 

                 Coordinating and facilitating the sharing of geospatial data among COG member jurisdictions and other public sector agencies in the metropolitan area;

 

                  Identifying opportunities for Committee members to address common GIS staff training needs cooperatively with each other and other groups and agencies;

 

                  Identifying opportunities for member government cost savings through cooperative purchasing and other collaborative agreements;

 

        Sponsoring partnerships and project-level planning for GIS and geospatial data projects involving multiple jurisdictions.
