Helicopter Study

Helicopters are used on a daily basis throughout the metropolitan Washington region – by both public and private agencies – to perform a variety of missions. In order to document helicopter operations, as well as to determine how they affect the region and how they may continue to do so in the future, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) previously sponsored regional helicopter system plan studies in 1992 and 2002. The 2002 study was conducted simultaneously with a statewide helicopter system plan sponsored by the Maryland Aviation Administration. This allowed coordinated data collection and analysis across the metropolitan Washington – Baltimore region. In conjunction with COG, the Federal Aviation Administration provided a large portion of the funding.

The Metropolitan Washington Joint Helicopter Advisory Group provided oversight of the 2002 study.
