COG and Redskins Promote Reading for Children

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) will kick off its annual summer reading program with the Washington Redskins for the fourth consecutive year.  Several players, including quarterback Gibran Hamdan and wide receiver Darnerien McCants, will read to children from Old Bridge Elementary  School at the Chinn Park Regional Library in Prince William, Virginia.

COG initiated the “Redskins Read” program with the Redskins Leadership Council as part of COG’s Summer Quest Reading Program begun in 1982.  During the 1990s, enrollment in the Summer Quest Program grew from 10,000 to more than 100,000. The program promotes reading and literacy and encourages students to visit their local libraries this summer. Studies indicate that children who read during the summer show significant gains in their reading skills and those who read consistently score higher on standardized tests.
