Description: The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) is seeking a graduate student intern with strong research and GIS skills to assist with housing demographic, and employment data and research projects in the Department of Community Planning and Services. Primary projects for the intern will include: • Analyzing data from the Census, American Community Survey, and other government data sources to perform analyses of transit-oriented development and mixed-use neighborhoods. • Gathering and compiling data from the metropolitan Washington region to create a comprehensive review and understanding of the types of housing assistance available to the region’s residents. • Gathering and compiling data from COG and various government sources to create a centralized database and interactive mapping tool to provide and display key attributes on the region’s Activity Centers. • Using data on local tax credit allocations, map the location where new affordable housing developments are being built or are in the pipeline to develop jurisdiction- and regional-level comparisons of development in the pipeline with current and projected affordable housing need. The intern will contribute to several of COG’s essential analysis and forecasting activities and gain experience with a variety of datasets used in planning and economic development. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should be graduate students in planning, urban studies, geography, political science, or related fields. Strong skills in ArcGIS are necessary, including experience geocoding data and creating maps. Experience analyzing and mapping Census and American Community Survey data strongly preferred. Strong visual communication and writing skills also required. Experience creating and managing databases in Excel or Access helpful. This is a paid, full-time internship for 8 to 10 weeks, depending on the intern’s schedule. The internship can be extended for additional weeks pending the intern’s availability.
