Bicycle & Pedestrian Planning

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan for the National Capital Region was adopted at the January 2015 meeting of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board.  This plan is an update to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan which was adopted in October 2010.

The plan identifies major bicycle and pedestrian projects the region wishes to carry out by 2040, and incorporates goals and performance indicators for walking and bicycling from the 1998 TPB Vision and the 2010 COG Region Forward 2050 plans. It identifies “recommended practices” likely to be effective in achieving those goals, and discusses trends in policy, mode share, and safety.

The plan contains 659 funded and unfunded regional projects that would add more than 1600 new miles of paths, bicycle lanes, and other facilities to the region's transportation system. The total cost would be approximately $3 billion.

The plan also shows the progress the region has made in the last four years. A total of 53 projects from the 2010 plan have been completed, adding 97 miles to the regional network of bike path and bike lanes, as well as new bicycle and pedestrian bridges, a pioneering bike sharing program, widespread adoption of “Complete Streets” policies, and significant progress on incorporating bicycle and pedestrian facilities into larger transportation projects and new developments. The Washington region has emerged as a national leader in bicycle and pedestrian planning.
